Senior Design - Engineering Ambassadors
Earthquake Shake Table

Through educational outreach programs, Engineering Ambassadors teach students how engineers improve the health, happiness, and safety of our world.  The team’s objective was to create a set of educational kits and an accompanying lesson plan for Engineering Ambassadors to use during high school visits.  The most important design parameters of the kits were determined to be durability, educational value, safety, and entertainment.  The team had a budget of $1000 and one semester to complete the project. A high school visit was done on April 8th to test the kits with a 9th grade Earth Systems Science classroom at State College Area High School.

The final deliverables of this project were a shake table and associated kit, including materials and directions for future use. In addition, the team created a video based on the initial school visit to be used as promotional material for the Engineering Ambassadors in the future.  The team had a $1000 budget and completed a shake table for less than $500. After the school visit, the team gathered feedback from the teacher and students in the class, and determined that we have satisfied customer needs with our kit design.

zAPP Lock - Bluetooh Master Lock

The zAPP Lock is a personal pad lock that can be completely controlled by a smart phone application.  zAPP incorporates Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 technology to allow users to remotely lock, unlock, and track usage of their pad lock.   The zAPP Lock and app allows users to grant and revoke access to the locks via their smart phones.  This solves the problem of keeping track of keys, needing the key holder to physically be on site to unlock the lock, remembering combinations, and changing pad locks each year at seasonal venues.  The zAPP Lock and app is perfect for niche markets such as golf courses.  The zAPP Team's plan was to expand to construction sites and industry, then to the consumer market over a 3-5 year period.

African Baobab Fruit Processing Machine

Baobab powder is very high in Calcium, Protein, Vitamin C, and pectin. Our customers, SUNU Harvest and food co-op in Benin, needed a way to process the baobab fruit in order to get this nutritious powder. The Baobab project was responsible for building three processing prototypes to be taken to Benin, Africa at the end of the semester. These machines were tested to make sure they could process 100 kilograms of baobab as fast as our customer needed. The team spent close to a 1,000 hours manufacturing in the Learning Factory and were able to complete the machines on time before the trip to Benin, Africa.

Wind Turbine Outreach Kit Design

General Electric funded a design project to make an educational wind turbine kit for students aged 8-14 years old. The purpose of this project is to show students the educational value of a wind turbine. Research, benchmarking, and the gathering of customer needs from middle school teachers and students were done during the design process. The team generated a number of innovative ideas from these opinions, and learned what improvements could be made to kits currently in market. The main goal of this project is to make a wind turbine that provides the most educational value to its students, can be easily assembled, durable, and safe.
